Recognising that a compassionate community is grown out of emotional wellbeing, we invited Alan McLean, to host two masterclasses during North Berwick Fringe by the Sea, to support our local community and others to learn more about their emotions, to enable them to support others better. The masterclasses are open to teachers, community workers, young people and anyone who feels that thy could benefit from this. Alan was formerly a Principal Psychologist in Glasgow. Early in his career he taught Modern Studies. He had a weekly column in The Scotsman for several years and was a regular contributor to the TES Scotland. His books – The Motivated School and Motivating Every Learner have been translated into several languages. His third book, ‘Knowing and Growing; Insights for Developing Ourselves and Others,’ was published in 2017. He iscurrently working on a book, ‘ Emotions: Mastery Over Mystery ,’ and has just completed a resource for parents and teachers, ‘the Compendium of Emotions.’ His recent work is freely available on www.whatmotivateslearning.com in the form of self-reflection profiles and emotional coaching tools. He will demonstrate his emotional coaching tool, “Emotional Wellbeing, Mastery over Mystery’ at North Berwick Fringe By the Sea.
He describes his masterclass as:
“Emotional Well-being – Mastery Over Mystery. This masterclass will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand emotions better. It has special relevance for those with responsibility for promoting well-being. Emotions underpin all our relationships, thinking and learning. There is no better way to understand ourselves and others than through our emotions. While we are born with a starter set of emotions, we learn to feel a broader range, but did you know we can learn to feel more? Well-being is not so much feeling good as being good at feeling. Mastering emotions comes down to our ability to interpret their guiding purpose. The masterclass will introduce the thinking behind the Emotion-Ring and its practical applications. The ‘Emotion-Ring’ is a template of emotion concepts, organised by their purpose, that can help us to cultivate uplifting emotions and address challenging emotions. We will use the ‘Ring’ to explore the purpose, benefits and pathways to Compassion. Self-reflection profiles and emotion coaching tools based on the Emotion-Ring are freely available at www.whatmotivateslearning.com”
